If you're new to air plants you may not know that they do not require soil! Air plants often live perched in the crux of trees in what are commonly referred to as cloud forests. This makes them an ideal indoor plant option for the apartment plant decorator or anyone with less outdoor garden potting space. You can place them in windowsills, in terrariums or gorgeous ceramic planters, or simply lay them flat on a shelf.
Ideally air plants do best with plenty of fresh air flow and bright indirect light. Keep your air plants away from hot direct sunlight and extremely dry or windy conditions should you opt to keep them outdoors. With proper care and conditions, air plants can thrive both indoors and outdoors!
Water your air plants once a week and increase watering to two to three times a week during really hot and dry seasons. Water your air plants by soaking them thoroughly in room temperature water for 10-20 minutes. Then drain the water and allow the plants to dry before placing them back in their space.
Keep in mind during hot weather seasons air plants may need to be spritzed with a spray bottle in between watering cycles if they begin to appear dry.
Varieties with thinner more spindly leaves retain less water and will become drier faster. Be sure to keep an eye on different varieties as you may notice some need to be watered more or less often depending on size and thickness of the plants leaves.
